Kerry Sutherland will fill the vacant North ward seat on the Tararua District Council.

Tararua District Councillors voted five to two to approve the appointment of Mr Sutherland, a local real estate agent.

He will replace Ernie Christison who recently resigned from Council.

Mr Sutherland had stood in the 2016 elections and was the next highest polling candidate. He had been a councillor previously for six years.

With the next local body elections only next year, the Tararua District Council had to choose between leaving the seat vacant, appointing a replacement, or holding a by-election.
