A Police vehicle was rammed during a pursuit earlier this week.

Just after midnight on Monday night a police patrol stopped a vehicle on State Highway 2 in Waipukurau.

Senior Constable Glynn Sharp said when questioned about his details, the male driver gave the officer a false name.

Police were able to correctly establish the man's identity, who was subject to a parole recall warrant issued by the Corrections Dept.

Mr Sharp said the driver was informed that he was under arrest, but instead of complying, he suddenly sped away in his car leading officers in a pursuit which was soon called off due to the offenders dangerous manner of driving.

Two Waipukurau units were joined by support units from Dannevirke and Hastings.

Mr Sharp said the vehicle was discovered parked up near Waipawa by a Hawke's Bay Dog handler, and the offender has then rammed the dog handlers vehicle and sped off towards Hastings before having his vehicle disabled by road spikes.

He said the man was arrested after trying to run from the disabled vehicle.

A search of the vehicle uncovered a large hunting knife as well as drug paraphernalia.

The man will face seven charges, and is currently in custody.
