A 17 year old will face charges of reckless driving and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle following a police chase.

On Sunday May 6th a police patrol attempted to stop a vehicle for excessive speed on State Highway 2, but the driver sped away, performing dangerous overtaking manoeuvres at speeds of up to 160km/hr.

The pursuit was called off by the officer.

Police say the driver lost control near the Waipukurau Golf Course, crashing into a culvert, before coming to a stop after crashing through a fence.

The driver and two passengers decamped from the vehicle in an attempt to evade Police, but were apprehended a short time later.

The car had been reported stolen from Dannevirke two days earlier, and Police say it had a space saver tyre fitted which is not designed for high speeds.

The driver had previously been forbidden to drive.
