A set of stables was completely destroyed by fire yesterday.

Firefighters were called to a property on Porangahau Road Waipukurau just after 7am, with the fire thought to have started sometime during the night.

Waipukurau Deputy Fire Chief, Glen Millar, said the Waipukurau, Waipawa and Tamatea brigades were all called to the property, with firefighters on-site until around 11am.

He said the roofing iron had to be removed so the base of the fire - 600mm of sawdust - could be extinguished.

Mr Millar said the building was a total loss, with the cause of the fire undetermined, although an electrical fault is unable to be ruled out.

The stables had housed pet lambs, which all perished in the fire.
