The Metservice has issued a heavy rain warning for the Tararua District.

A complex low pressure system moving onto the North Island this morning will bring periods of rain or showers, with possible thunderstorms and localised downpours over the next two days.

For Tararua, periods of heavy rain are expected from this morning through to early afternoon tomorrow.

Forecasters say we can expect 120 to 160mm of rain to accumulate during this period, especially about the hills and ranges, with peak intensities 15 to 25mm per hour.

Meanwhile a heavy rain watch is in place for Central Hawkes Bay.

In the 47 hours from 10:00 am today to 9:00 am Friday, heavy falls of rain are likely, especially about the hills and ranges.
