A Dannevirke man who blew more than six times the legal driving alcohol limit has avoided a jail sentence. 47 year old Matthew Whiteside was charged with driving with a breath alcohol limit of 1835 micro-grams on January 4th. Judge Lance Rowe told Whiteside it was a miracle he didn’t kill someone. It was Whiteside’s third drink-drive conviction. The Tararua District will move to an Open Fire Season from Wednesday April 7th. Water restrictions were eased in both Tararua and Central Hawke’s Bay heading into the Easter break. Two Police officers were assaulted while attending a job in Waipawa last weekend. Constable Andy Walker said the officers were trying to detain a man for a mental health assessment, but he produced a large carving knife, and advanced on the officers.
