Firefighters spent a number of hours fighting a grass fire near Otane yesterday.

Fire and Emergency NZ were alerted just before midday, sending appliances and tankers from Otane, Tamatea Rural, Waipukurau, Tikokino, Elsthorpe, Hastings and Napier.

A helicopter was also used in fighting the blaze.

Fire and Emergency said there were no road closures as a result of the fire.

The Tararua District Council says water conservation on Pahiatua remains of the utmost importance.

There have been issues with the town supply since early last week, prompting a total outdoor water use ban and calls for urgent conservation efforts.

Yesterday the Council said treated water levels had risen to 12.3% -but 50% was needed.

Engineers are working to produce more treated water to replenish the reservoir.

Central Hawke’s Bay’s Steve Wyn-Harris was at Government House in Wellington yesterday to receive his Kings Birthday Honour.

Steve was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit when the honours list was announced for his services to the farming industry and rural communities.

He was presented with his award by Governor General, Dame Cindy Kiro.

A big congratulations to Hori Bartlett who came 1st in the Hawkes Bay Year 7 Boys Cross Country in Hastings on Tuesday.

Takapau School Principal Biddy Tully said Hori’s win was a wonderful achievement.
