The Prime Minister has announced $2.5 million in funding to replace and upgrade the stopbank to protect the Waipawa Drinking Water Treatment Plant.

Chris Hipkins made a series of announcements in the region and visited the treatment plant yesterday afternoon.

Wairarapa MP and Government Minister Kieran McAnulty, who accompanied the Prime Minister, said the original stopbank was destroyed by Cyclone Gabrielle.

McAnulty said it has been his role as the Hawke’s Bay Regional lead recovery Minister to listen to what the community needs and said the treatment plant was a top priority.

The money will come from this years Budget, with completion of the stopbank due by June next year.

A man was flown to Hawke’s Bay Hospital earlier this week with critical injuries following a motorbike accident.

Senior Constable Andy Walker said the accident happened on Te Awa Road on Tuesday afternoon.

He said a male, who had just finished work for the day, lost control on the gravel road with the Can-Am side-by-side he was riding leaving the road and hitting a pine tree.

The victim of a stabbing at Takapau on Monday is recovering well in Hawke’s Bay Hospital.

The man was flown to hospital with critical injuries and underwent emergency surgery.

A family member told Central FM the victim is doing well, and while he is still in ICU, it is hoped he will be transferred to a general ward soon.

Daylight Savings begins this weekend.

Clocks will go forward one hour at 2am Sunday.

Daylight Savings will run until Sunday the 7th of April next year.

With a number of cooking related fires in Central Hawke’s Bay recently, Fire & Emergency NZ is encouraging people to check and change smoke alarm batteries when putting their clocks forward for Daylight Saving.

Term Four will start on Monday the 9th of October.

It is Round 8 of the Bunnings Warehouse NPC, with the Hawke’s Bay Magpies away for the remainder of the round robin competition.

Tomorrow the Magpies will face Southland in Invercargill, with kick-off at 2.05pm.

Southland are currently bottom of the table.
