A rescue helicopter and Hato Hone rapid response vehicle were sent to the scene of a single-vehicle accident near Norsewood on Tuesday night.

The accident happened about 6.30pm on SH2 between Garfield Road and Gundries Road, with a person trapped in the vehicle.

Fire & Emergency crews freed them, before they were taken to Palmerston North Hospital with serious injuries.

SH2 was reopened about midnight.


Hawke’s Bay farmers Simon & Josi Beamish, and Hugo & Pip Beamish have been named Supreme Winners of the East Coast Balance Farm Environment Awards.

The awards were presented in Gisborne last night.

The Beamish’s farm Awapai west of Hastings running 5,500 breeding ewes, 3,700 trade lambs, 850 beef cattle, 300 bulls, and 300 Wagyu beef cattle.

The judging panel said they were impressed with the use of innovation, technology, and modern ideas.

The property was severely impacted by Cyclone Gabrielle with a significant amount of work going in to restore the farms infrastructure since then.

As well as the Supreme Award, the Beamish’s also won the Ballance Agri-Nutrients Soil Management Award; Beef + Lamb New Zealand Livestock Farm Award; the Hill Laboratories Agri-Science Award; and the NZFET Innovation Award.

 Other winners recognised last night include Porangahau farmers Ben and Libby Tosswill from Birch Hill Station who won the Norwood Farming Efficiency Award; East Coast Farming for the Future Award; and the NZFET Climate Recognition Award.


Applications for the Horizons Regional Council Don Linklater Memorial Bursary are now open until the end of this month.

The bursary, valued at $8,000, aims to support students studying in areas relevant to some of Horizons Regional Council’s work, and can be split between up to four recipients.

The bursary covers students studying at undergraduate or postgraduate level, in areas like environmental planning and engineering, resource management, and environmental modelling – with a particular interest in river and drainage basin dynamics.
