Two people died following a motor vehicle accident near the Pekapeka wetland on Friday afternoon.
The two-car crash occurred about 2.30pm, and left SH2 closed until late Friday night.
Police said two people died at the scene of the accident, while two other people – one in a critical condition – were taken to Hawke’s Bay Hospital.
The critically injured person was then flown to Wellington Hospital,
where they are in the ICU there.
The Police Serious Crash Unit is undertaking an investigation into the cause of the accident.
Strong winds are on the way for Tararua District today, with a Strong Wind Watch in place.
The Watch came into effect at 11 o’clock last night and is through until 1pm today.
Metservice forecasters say northwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed parts of the district.
More strong winds are expected for Tararua and Central Hawke’s Bay on Wednesday.

Palmerston North rider Sophie Scott won the Cup aboard Waitangi Skynet, and also placed second with Benrose Stellar.
Sophie was the only rider to have two clear rounds on both her mounts in the $80,000 class and was presented with the Cup by Hawke’s Bay’s Peter Holden – the very first winner of the Olympic Cup in 1953.

The Central Hawke’s Bay District Council is reducing the road to one lane while road repairs and preparations for further resealing and waterproofing in the future are undertaken.
Traffic management will be in place from 8am to 5pm from today through until Monday March 25th.
The Council says access will be available at all times for emergency service vehicles.

The champs were played at Bridge Pa, with Zwart playing his final four holes in five-under-par to finish the tournament at 15-under-par and win by a stroke.
