Review of the Waipukurau Little Theatre's production of "The Drowning Girls"
Written by Beth Graham, Charlie Tomlinson & Daniela Vlaskalic
Directed by Madeleine Howard
Shelly & I had the pleasure of attending the final dress rehearsal of the Waipukurau Little Theatres latest production: “The Drowning Girls”
Upon entering we were met with an eerie bride mannequin … Setting the scene for what was to follow.
The set was covered upon arrival and the show begins with a projector slide show giving us facts & an in-depth look into the man “George Joseph Smith” and his many aliases.
George made a living from marrying woman gaining their possessions then moving onto the next woman.
Bessie, Margaret & Alice were only 3 of the 8 wives. The stories of the 3 women follow & I must add based on true events.
The set design was incredibly clever & the actual use of water added extra detail (expect a splash if seated close to the stage) Single set one act show, shorter in time round 1hour 15min.
No need for a jumper the theatre is very warm, this is for the benefit of the 3 actresses who do a brilliant job navigating water scenes which they do flawlessly.
We were both very impressed at how each character was able to take on other roles to tell each individual story their ability to jump from voice-to-voice, character to character was fantastic!
The stories were told with emotion & authenticity you will be left with goosebumps they took on the roles confidently & did not falter.
Director - Madeline Howard has once again given us another fantastic show that does not disappoint.
Lj Easter, Anna Phillips & Kylie Vanston our actresses did justice respectfully to the 3 ladies that lost their lives in terrible circumstances.
“George Joseph Smith” was one awful man!
