Horizons Regional Council will join the Hawke’s Bay Regional and Tararua District Councils’ in establishing Maori constituencies in time for the 2022 local government elections.

Horizons Chair Rachel Keedwell acknowledged a petition delivered to Council and says it was an honour to host a large contingency of Māori at Regional House this week.

A survey on Maori constituencies saw 1649 responses, with 1,475 supporting the establishment of Māori constituencies, with 152 opposed.

Ms Keedwell says Council will now need to formally consult with the region’s communities about their preferences for the overall makeup of council’s constituencies.

Central Hawke’s Bay Police Officer, Senior Constable Andy Walker, has been presented with a Letter of Appreciation for his work with Police.

Mr Walker, who recently ticked over 14 years in the force, was presented with the letter by Hawke’s Bay Area Commander, Inspector Lincoln Sycamore at the Waipukurau Police Station yesterday.

Mr Sycamore said Andy – who is the Rural Support Officer for CHB, as well as being involved in Search & Rescue and is a Disaster Victim Identification officer – goes above and beyond in his role.

Officer in Charge of Central Hawke’s Bay Police, Sergeant Neil Baker, said Andy makes an immense contribution to the CHB station.

Four former Central Hawke’s Bay College students were at Government House last weekend to receiver their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

Dani Baker, Jessica Annabel, Taylor Auckram and Ella Jamieson were presented with their awards by Governor General, Dame Patsy Reddy.

Netball
Hawke’s Bay Super 8 games tonight – Thirsty Whale Otane play HHSOG at 6pm, while Central Sports Vet Services HB play All In Elusive at 7.30 tonight.  Both games are at Woodford House this week.

Rugby

Manawatu Competition :The Dannevirke Seniors will play Freyberg Old Boys at Rugby Park Dannevirke at 12.45pm, with the Danmevirke Colts away playing Massey University.

Bush Competition : Puketoi have home advantage when they play Carterton at 2.30pm tomorrow.

Hawke’s Bay Competition : Tomorrow is the Central Rugby & Sports Club Day.

And best of luck to local firefighters who are in Auckland this weekend taking part in the Firefighters Climb, raising money for the Leukaemia and Blood Cancer Foundation NZ.

The Waipawa, Waipukurau, Tamatea Rural and Dannevirke brigades all have representatives taking on the Sky Tower Challenge.
