A final meet the candidates evening is being held in Tararua tonight.

Two such events have been held so far – the first in Dannevirke last week, and the other in Pongaroa on Monday night.

The third and final is at the Bush Community Centre in Pahiatua at 7 o’clock tonight.

Issues raised at the meetings so far include Three Waters reform, water quality, and roading.

Meanwhile voting papers are due to arrive in letterboxes from the end of this week.

Papers will begin being sent out from this Friday, and must be returned no later than 12 noon on Saturday the 8th of October.

Special voting will also be available from this Friday until 12 noon on the 8th of October.

The Tararua District Council has closed a section of Route 52 as there are fears the whole road could fall away due to recent wet weather.

The section of Route 52, about 5km south of Pongaroa, has large surface cracks, with the situation worsening over the last few days.

The Council says there is no short-term solution to re-open the road and is looking for places to cart a significant amount of slip material too.

The Council has also closed Rimu Road to heavy traffic due to multiple slips and dropouts.

A road snowfall warning is in place for the Napier-Taupo Road later today.

Snow is forecast down to 700 metres this afternoon, with the warning in effect for the period from 3pm until 11pm.

Metservice forecasters say snow flurries are possible about the top of the road this afternoon, but little if any accumulation is expected. 

They say from about 6pm however, 1cm or less may accumulate.

COVID-19 and influenza vaccines are once again available from a mobile clinic in Central Hawke’s Bay today.

The clinic is being held  in the carpark near the CHB Museum in Waipawa from  11am to 3pm.

Free RATS tests and face masks will also be available.

Online entries for this weekend’s Hatuma Half Marathon close tonight.

The event is being held this Sunday, with options for individuals, social or corporate teams to complete 21.5km, 10km, or 5km distances.
