A motorcyclist was flown to Hawke’s Bay Regional Hospital on Friday morning following an accident.

Emergency services were responded to the crash just after 9am on Elsthorpe Road between St Lawrence Road and Atua Road.

The Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter was also called to the scene.

Part of State Highway 50 was closed on Friday following a scrub fire near Ashley Clinton.

Fire & Emergency NZ was called around 1.15pm after the permitted burn-off got out of control due to a change of wind direction.

Police were also called in to assist with the highway shut, and diversions put in place on Balfour Road, Ashley Clinton Road and Nelsons Road.

The road was reopened about 2.30pm.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand said two rural fire trucks from Tamatea, one tanker from Tikokino and a fire pump from Ashley Clinton attended the scene.

There is another week of daytime closures of the Saddle Road this week.

Waka Kotahi NZTA says pavement repairs and maintenance on a narrow and steep section on the Ashurst side of the hill are being undertaken.

The Saddle will be closed between 9am and 2.30pm Monday to Friday this week.

Drivers are asked to use the Pahiatua Track during these times.
