There is a strong wind watch in place for Tararua District and the ranges of Hawke’s Bay today.

In the ten-hour period from 5am to 3pm, Metservice says northwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.

Forecasters say the strong wind watch may get extended as west to northwest winds are forecast to strengthen again overnight tonight and tomorrow.

Strong winds are also expected across Sunday and Monday, with severe gale force winds in Tararua District Monday.

Meanwhile GoBus has advised that buses won’t run in Tararua District this morning due to the strong winds.

Dannevirke High School is further rostering home students next week as sickness levels amongst staff and students remains high.

From Wednesday to Friday this week, Years 9 and 19 students have been rostered home.

Next week, Year 13’s will be rostered home Monday; Year 12’s Tuesday; Year 11’s Wednesday; Year 10’s Thursday and Year 9’s on Friday.

Dannevirke High has also postponed its Year 7 & 8 Open Evening planned for next Tuesday.

Matariki celebrations have begun locally.

This week the Tirama Light Trail has been setup at the Dannevirke Domain, with the final night tonight.

Tonight there is also a Matariki Festival at the Domain from 5-8pm.

The free event will feature entertainment, kai and a fireworks display.
